Open-core¶
Plasma is open source under EUPL-1.2, built in the open at github.com/plasmash. It follows an open-core model: the platform primitives are open and community-driven; advanced operational tooling is offered as a managed/commercial layer.
What's open¶
The primitives you build and run on:
- The layer architecture and component model
- Component types and their lifecycle
- The ontology framework (entities, metrics)
- Integration patterns (ECST, NATS, relays)
- The
plasmactltoolchain and core deployment
What's commercial¶
Operational tooling where complexity warrants dedicated support:
- Advanced platform automation and multi-tenant management
- Enterprise deployment, monitoring, and alerting
- Professional support and SLAs — via Plasma Cloud, fully managed Plasma operated by Skilld, the creators of Plasma
Why this split¶
Platform primitives benefit from community contribution and trust, while operational complexity needs sustained maintenance. A clear boundary lets the project stay healthy and lets you choose how much you self-operate versus delegate.
These docs cover the open platform. Where a capability is part of the managed offering, it's called out as such.
